The Georgian Government presented the UN Office at Geneva with a qvevri, which is included in the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list, to mark the 70th anniversary of the UN foundation.

Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze and Director General of the UN Office at Geneva Michael Møller addressed the attending audience. The ceremony was also attended by the Lithuanian Foreign Minister and the Kyrgyz Vice Prime Minister.

"It is an honour and privilege for me to present to the UN Geneva Office a gift of a traditional Georgian wine vessel - qvevri. This ancient and indispensable element of our Georgian culture and tradition has been placed here in Geneva as our contribution to the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. Georgia is known as a cradle of wine with its long tradition of winemaking. Unique traditional method of fermenting wine in qvevri has an 8,000 year history", Mikheil Janelidze said. A memorial plaque, giving viewers information about qvevri's history and purpose, was unveiled as part of the event.

In conclusion, the guests tasted the Georgian wine and watched Merab Kokochashvili's documentary "Cradle of Wine". Brochures about the Georgian traditional winemaking history and techniques were handed out.
